My NS said diet and/or supplements won't make any difference. My ND told me to eat an anti-inflammatory diet. I've noticed the Budwig diet seems to have many cancer patients who believe in it, but since meningioma is not 'cancer' I don't know if it would help. I'm staying away from sugar and processed foods and am trying to eat all organic and healthy.

Thanks for the prompt reply. What does an anti-inflammatory diet consist of. I haven't really adjusted my diet, just keeping it healthy. I did start taking melatonin (sleep/anxiety), aspirin a day, and fish oil (which is gross but nutritious). I'll have to look into the Budwig diet.

Hi Javi,

As a result of a craniotomy to remove a meningioma 12/07, I have a seizure disorder and take 3000 mg of generic Keppra/day. Due to this I take a B complex pill and extra B6. And drink a lot of water.

I also take vit. D because I do not get enough sunlight – or when I am outdoors, I use sunscreen. I take vit. C to help my gums (I am prone to infections from the bacteria found in my mouth).

I do not take any other supplements because I ensure I get what I need via my food choices.

BTW, as for the Budwig diet – it was recently discussed on T.H.E. Brain Tumor email list as someone had read/heard of its potential use for brain cancer. The science literature has shown it has use in controlling seizures in children with epilepsy. The science lit states this type of diet is not safe. There are web sites in which people claim it can cure brain cancer.

There is a lot of info available in books and on the internet re anti inflammatory foods (guess you could call my way of eating to be anti inflammatory.....).

Here's a link to a list of good/bad foods I found online -- http://www.metabolismadvice.com/anti_inflammatory_food/ -- there's lots of similar sites (I didn't want to type out my ND's list). I found things on this list that my ND advises against. Lots of conflicting advice out there.

Melatonin gives me a bigger headache so I stay away from it. My ND suggested Valerian to help me sleep but that also gave me a worse headache. Not sure what's going on with those and my M.

For my headaches I take either Tylenol or Advil -- my NS told me to stay away from aspirin as it could cause bleeding. I do want to try Boswellia -- that's supposed to be a good pain reliever, I'm hoping it won't give me more pain. :D

Why is the Budwig diet not safe? Are the people who claim it can cure brain cancer, people who have been cured?

Oops! My mistake - I wrote about the wrong diet. Geesh - so much for my memory! : -)

I was talking about the ketogenic diet - not the budwig diet, in my comments a little earlier (actually both were being discussed on the other BT email group).

The budwig diet - what I have heard from the other list - can have a yucky taste as a mix of flaxseed oil and cottage cheese is the basis for one of the "recipes".

From Wikipedia: "Johanna Budwig (30 September 1908–19 May 2003) was a German chemist, pharmacologist and author. She developed and promoted (from 1952) the Budwig protocol/Budwig diet, which is based on the regular consumption of foods rich in linolenic and linoleic acids, such as Flaxseed oil, low fat cottage cheese and vegetable juices. Budwig claimed this diet would cure or prevent many forms of cancers."

I read the Anti-Cancer Book by Dr Servan-Schreiber. I found it really interesting, as he is a doctor who had a brain tumor. I like how it is not a "diet" per-say, but tips on eating well. I have taken some of his advice. Even if it does not help with the tumor, it is overall a great way to eat to be healthy.

My son also takes a list of supplements:
Melatonin, Calcium, Vit D (anemia/chronic hives due to Vit D deficiency), Vit C, Ginger Root (motion sickness), Gingko Biloba (concentration/mental fog)...have also tried Green Tea, Fish Oil, and a few others for various symptoms. I always check for possible drug interactions on www.drugs.com to be on the safe side. It's been a huge process of elimination and placebo effects for him I am sure...mind over matter in certain circumstances : )

Hi! Yes, I too have heard of the book/study. The author provides evidence of a connection between diet and health conditions, concluding that an animal based diet was linked to chronic health conditions such as heart disease and cancer. This was based on observations of people living in rural areas - such as China.

I was a total vegetarian for much of my life but added fish back in, a while back - I try for wild rather than farm raised - not always plentiful here in IL! Other than my ex-meningioma and associated side effects, I have had/have excellent health.

I think there is a strong link between what we eat and other life style factors (such as exercise, stress reduction, getting eniough sleep) and our health.

Not knowing source for digestive dysfunction and metabolic declines when first came on, switched to spring water at home for all drinking and cooking, preferring boiled water items mostly when eating out (soup, gravy, hot tea). Still maintain those policies, swearing off pre-sweetened drinks as much as possible.

After thyroid stabilized by medication, remaining troublemaker is lactose.

Has any one read the China Study.  It was a 20 year comprehensive study on nutrition, very interesting.  I'm pretty much eating a diet based on that book.
